Whether you are gifting a smartphone, a tablet, a remote control device, or any type of handheld having proper charge is a must. Do not leave this charging process until the last minute. When you set the devices out on Christmas eve plug them in. That way they will be at 100% by morning.
This one should go without saying but I'll say it anyway. Christmas has been and always will be all about stocking up on batteries. Do not skimp on the type of Batteries you get either. Duracell Ultra and Energizer far outweigh the cheap competition.
This step somewhat goes along with making sure devices are fully charged. Make sure that devices have all the necessary updates done whenever possible before Christmas Morning. This is especially true if you bought a new device like an iPhone or iPad several months ago for a Christmas present. The underlying operating system is completely different now. Make sure that to the extent possible you have everything updated. Note: Sometimes due to account restrictions (i.e. not knowing a family member's password) it will be impossible to do this ahead of time.
This advice is true all around but especially if you are giving a gaming system for Christmas. Many games are enormous to download plus there are undoubtedly going to be numerous system updates. Nothing is more tedious than watching a progress bar (slowly) tick across the screen.
It may be hard to believe but even on Christmas Day there are likely those elves who will come to your house to get everything working. I am one of them (though I don't think of myself as an elf)! I will be offering times on Christmas Afternoon to setup virtual appointments or in home visits if the situation warrants it.
